Fela!

New Years Day 2012 at the Ahmanson Theatre.

The band was great, but the guitars were turned down too low. I can’t imagine why such guitar-driven grooves would be played with such weak attention to the guitar. I can go see the band at the Troubadour on Jan 13 and maybe get some better sound and dance out of it.

And his 27 wives/backup singers were depicted by only 8 women. There was no mention of his Aids-related disease death.

We, the audience, sat obediently in our assigned seats and were encouraged to get up and dance only once when we were instructed on how to shake our asses to tell time. I was imagining all of us moving hypnotically with the grooves, masters of our own asses no more. I think that a lot of the cast being filled by understudies for this showing had a bit to do with my disappointment. My expectations were very high going in.

Having said all of that, we still enjoyed the show and the theatre quite a lot. The 6 LP box set-as-souvenir helped ease the pain of minor disappointment!
